How to access information held by the National Information Technology Agency under Ghana’s Right to Information Act, 2019.
Overview
The Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) was passed by the Parliament of Ghana in 2019 and assented to by the President in the same year. The Act gives people the right to access information held by public institutions in Ghana.
The National Information Technology Agency recognizes the role of the RTI law in fostering transparency and accountability in public affairs, particularly in a democratic society. NITA’s implementation plans and procedures are guided by five fundamental principles: legal guarantees of access to information, proactive disclosure, clear implementation and procedures, adherence to international best standards, and respect for individuals’ right to privacy.
NITA has established a Right to Information (RTI) Unit, operated by a trained Information Officer, to process applications for access to information. Access may be subject to exemptions under the Act to protect the public interest.
Application
In accordance with Section 18 of the RTI Act, 2019, an application to access information held by the National Information Technology Agency may be made in writing or orally.
